Amazon Fire TV hardware

Minimum Requirements

Amazon makes many different devices across multiple product ranges, and this makes it very difficult to gauge what their capabilities are across all products. The end result is that making a minimum requirements specification is not practical. Instead, we have tested a wide range of popular Amazon products, and rated their suitability according to Fugo’s testing requirements.

💡 Please note that while Fugo can still be used on Amazon Fire TV Sticks, we no longer recommend them for new purchases due to their limitations in running digital signage smoothly. We will continue to maintain and improve our Fire Stick support, but for a better experience, we recommend considering other devices if your budget allows.

You will be able to use Fugo, albeit with slightly limited functionality, if you already own one and wish to use Fugo.

The Chromecast with Google TV, Raspberry Pi 5, and the dedicated Amazon Signage Stick (with Fugo support coming soon) are better alternatives that offer more reliable performance for digital signage.

For more details on the limitations of Amazon Fire devices and a full list of supported and unsupported hardware, visit our Amazon Fire TV Hardware Directory here.

Internet speed & connection

A minimum internet speed of at least 10 mpbs is required to run Fugo optimally.

You can use websites such as http://speedtest.att.com/speedtest/ or https://www.speedcheck.org to check the speed and strength of your connection.

You can usually check the WiFi signal strength for most devices directly in the settings menu.

WiFi

Different digital signage devices will support different levels of WiFi, and in general, if you can get a device that supports 802.11ac WiFi, you’ll get the best network speeds. Most the devices we recommend either support 802.11 ac, n or g WiFi. At 1,300 Mbps, 802.11ac is about 3 times faster than 802.11n at 450 Mbps. 802.11g is much slower at 54 Mbps, but most the devices we list support at least 802.11n.

On the flip side, your internet speed probably won’t ever be 1,300 Mbps, or even 450 Mbps for that matter, so this won’t affect your internet speed much, but what you get from a device with 802.11ac WiFi is more stable connectivity and up to date internals, which promise a better experience.

Ethernet

For some use cases, you'll want a digital signage device to connect to the internet via a wired connection with an Ethernet cable. In this case the best device to choose is of course one that includes an Ethernet port, but some devices also have support for official Ethernet adapter or 3rd party adapters.

You’ll also want to check what Ethernet speed your device supports and make sure you are using the correct cables to match.

Recommended media players

Budget sticks, dongles, and boxes

Consumer media players are ideal for businesses needing to power a few screens with relatively simple digital signage needs. Here are our top consumer-grade media players for digital signage:

At a minimum, we recommend devices running Android 10 or later, Windows 10 or later, or ChromeOS to ensure compatibility and performance of the Fugo player app.

Mini PCs

For digital signage needs requiring more storage, enhanced security features, and remote device management capabilities, we recommend the following:

For those opting for ChromeOS devices, you'll find extra advantages through the Google Admin Console. It offers advanced remote device management features for device settings, automated updates, and enhanced security configurations, making it easier to keep everything running smoothly.

To ensure full functionality of the Fugo app, it's crucial that your device runs an up-to-date Chrome browser. This is especially important if you plan to display content that demands more from the CPU, such as live Looker or Power BI dashboards.

Recommended all-in-one displays

Consumer smart TVs

Here are a few affordable and entry level all-in-one TVs that can run Fugo's Player app without needing an additional media player to plug in:

Professional SoC displays

These display options offer great performance and are rated to display digital signage content in demanding environments up to 24 hours:

Interactive displays

Outdoor & window-facing displays

Video wall displays

I have a smart TV - do I need a player too?

The short answer

As long as your smart TV has a browser, you can use Fugo. Simply enter https://player.fugo.ai into the TV's browser to get started.

The long answer

While it's possible to use Fugo directly through your smart TV's browser, we've found that many smart TV browsers are often outdated. This will limit access to the latest features and updates that Fugo offers.

But there is an exception: smart TVs that run on Android. For these models, you can use our dedicated Android app, which ensures you have access to all the features and a more seamless experience.

Why consider an external player?

For a more reliable and feature-rich experience, we generally recommend using an external media player with your smart TV. They often receive more frequent updates and support a wider range of functionalities compared to built-in smart TV browsers.

See our list above for recommendations.

Digital signage displays

Another option is to upgrade to a professional digital signage display. These displays are designed specifically for commercial use, offering features like 24/7 continuous playback and higher durability.

See our list above for some recommendations.
