What is Amazon Fire TV?

Amazon Fire TV is an operating system developed by Amazon, designed for smart TVs, media streaming devices, and tablets. It offers access to a wide range of streaming apps, services, and content, allowing users to enjoy movies, shows, and more on their compatible devices.

Amazon Fire TV devices can also be used for digital signage, providing a cost-effective option to display content on screens in business environments.

⚠️ However, despite recommending Fire TV Sticks in the past, we no longer recommend these devices for new purchases.

We will continue to maintain and improve our Fire Stick support, but for a better experience, we recommend considering other devices if your budget allows.

The Chromecast with Google TV, Raspberry Pi 5, and the dedicated Amazon Signage Stick (with Fugo support coming soon) are better alternatives that offer more reliable performance for digital signage.

That said, you will be able to use Fugo, albeit with limited functionality, if you already own one and wish to use Fugo on it.

Read on for our list of supported & non-supported devices.

Minimum requirements

We have not set a list of minimum requirements, instead listing exactly which devices we support and don't support.

It's important to mention that you don't need an Amazon Prime subscription to use Fugo, but you will need an Amazon account. If you don't already have one, you can sign up here.

Known Limitations

Ultimately these Amazon devices are consumer products that were designed for people who enjoy streaming content at home, making them less than ideal in a production environment. This means that while Amazon Fire devices may work, they do have some quirks when it comes to implementing them for digital signs. These include:

  • Multi-video playback is not supported.

  • Anything (text, image, etc) layered on top of a video in the Design Studio will not be displayed on screen.

  • Video apps (Youtube, Vimeo) will not obey the orientation settings you set for portrait mode in your screen settings.

  • The player often crashes due to high memory usage.

  • The player often overtakes the screen with error message related to remote control.

  • Even if a device is working fine now, Amazon may push updates that pose challenges to using the Fire Stick in commercial digital signage settings.

  • Amazon frequently issues software updates that can inadvertently break digital signage capabilities, despite Fire TV working initially. Enhanced Fugo features can suddenly stop functioning when an update rolls out.

  • In some instances, the Fire TV operating system lacks stability for more complex tasks like digital signage. You may experience issues like random full screen interruptions, remote connectivity, or memory pressure crashes. Sometimes a simple workaround can restore Fugo functionality after a crash, but there are better devices on the market.

Overall, both the Fire TV hardware and software have fundamental limitations for digital signage purposes. The lack of control and predictability in the closed Fire TV ecosystem results in an inconsistent user experience.
